One of the highlights of our trip to Kerala was attending a performance of the ancient dance drama called Kutiyattam. These originated as temple dances but are now regularly performed in truncated versions for tourists. However, the extended dance dramas are being kept alive and renewed by various groups around Kerala. This performance lasted about three hours. The movements are very slow and methodical, somewhat like a combination of Kabuki and Opera. Much of the acting is done with eye movements and hand gestures called mudras. Please see the link above for some shots of the dancers.
